Gloucester Council – New Waste Management Facility

March 2019

South Gloucestershire Council has announced plans to build a new waste management facility in Filton.

The council has purchased the Viridor Filton Collections Unit on North Bristol Park industrial estate as part of a £6.5m project to improve recycling services and increase waste management capacity in the area.

This will be replaced with a transfer station, depot for waste vehicles and ‘Sort It’ recycling centre.

The council will also look at building a reuse shop where recoverable items can be tested by staff and sold second-hand.

Viridor will continue to operate the collections unit until the facility’s demolition date in 2021, with the new services rolled out in 2023.

The facility will cater for the growing communities in the Cribbs Patchway New Neighbourhood, Charlton Hayes and former Airfield housing developments.

Cabinet member for tourism and communities Paul Hughes said: “By redeveloping this site, we will be able to manage waste and recycling services closer to the growth areas around Filton.

“The new facility will have the capacity to manage the extra waste that comes from new homes and its location will reduce the number and length of journeys taken by the trucks across the district to collect waste and recyclable materials.”

South Gloucestershire currently recycles 51.6% of all household waste and has collected an extra 4,495 tonnes of recycling since January 2018.
