Iโm reading through the new launch of the โGreat British Energy company and I am excited that itโs recognising a real need in our industry -โฆ its sounds great with itโs stated mission: โto drive clean energy deployment to create jobs, boost energy independence, and ensure UโK taxpayers, billpayers and communities reap the benefits of clean, secure, homegrown energy.โ This is something weโd all welcome.
GBE is a public body hopefully โworking in lockstep with industry, we can help drive the innovation and investment required to transform our power system and decarbonise the grid by 2030โ
I know from experience of working with our renewable energy developers in the UK over the last 10 years that they always find a way to keep going, keep investing, developing, consenting and building. When Ofgem said they didnโt know how to deal with energy storage 2015 developers carried on and said weโll cross that bridge when we get there and led the way- I know and trust our industry, and that hydrogen, grid stability technology and asset management platforms will all strengthen our sector, but Iโve not yet seen it truly led by govt- except perhaps for CFDโs in 2014.
What I canโt yet see are any plans for the โgrid lockโ currently stymieing progress at the moment, but I have hope and optimism for the future. Can Great British Energy get things moving at pace and find a way to remove this most stubborn of barriers. Time will tell.
