Grid Portfolio Engineer – Wind, Solar & Storage

Our client is looking for a Grid Portfolio Engineer who can support a broad range of cross portfolio wind, solar and storage projects supporting the Asset Management and Operations Support teams.

The position of ‘Portfolio Grid Engineer’ will be responsible for developing the UK&I AM Grid strategy and leading all of the client facing Grid related initiatives across our AM portfolio.

This role will be a key focal point between the delivery teams within support services and wider Group functions and the clients. This role will develop and standardise the Grid services that our client can offer in relation to operational assets managed by the UK&I Asset Management Team, to achieve company, client, team and project objectives.

To assist the Asset Managers and Site Operational Managers in the Management of the company UK & I portfolio, ensuring adherence to best practice for safety, quality and environmental performance throughout the project lifecycle.

This role will report to the Head of Operations Support in the UK&I and will also work closely with the Asset Managers, Business Development Managers, Operations Support Team, AM Finance Team and UKI Energy Networks Team.

This is a highly visible role within the company and developing the Grid Services strategy and increasing the standardisation and volume of associated Grid related additional services for the UK&I AM business is a key strategic aim for the business.

Promoting Grid services to clients and ensuring RES is maximising potential revenues from these workstreams, with a focus on key accounts.

This role will directly support and influence the strategies of the support services business units and will be expected to work with heads of business areas to develop new Grid related services that can be delivered to key clients.

The role will be expected to increase and manage the company’s exposure to the target markets through client engagement, conference sessions and roundtable events.

The role will require regular communication with target clients and provide feedback to the business units to refine the product offering.

Collaboration and regular meetings with the Energy Networks Team to share information on Grid Policies and Initiatives.

Key Accountabilities

As Grid Portfolio Engineer you will:

  • Develop, review and enhance the Grid strategy in relation to renewable assets managed by UK&I Asset Management Team.
  • Monitor any changes to Grid regulation, policies and ancillary services as they may apply to Support Services client assets. Typical areas of interest will include, as a minimum, grid charging, NGESO pathfinder tenders, NGESO ancillary service procurement, DS3 services, DSO services.
  • Provide a Monthly Grid Strategy report to UK&I Asset Management Team
  • Join regular meetings with UK&I Energy networks Team and share information with UK&I Asset Management team
  • Understand and interpret client needs, clearly communicating client goals to internal and external stakeholders
  • Be responsible for coordinating the end to end delivery of Grid related services and one-off projects on behalf of clients.
  • Be the first point of call for technical grid connection agreement or grid compliance queries
  • Ensure all Grid related activity is linked back to the client specific Value Enhancement Plans
  • Have a commercial awareness of the existing Asset Management Agreements and identifying which elements of our Grid services are in or out of scope
  • Identify additional Grid Services which could be delivered as Chargeable Services and manage these services to completion using existing resource. Monitor financial upside of these services per project, client, technology and portfolio.
  • Lead on areas of personal expertise as part of the Operations Support Team objectives and Manage ad-hoc Grid queries from the Asset Managers. Active participation in Continuous Improvement and innovation projects.
  • Support our growth and cost reduction targets.

Reporting

  • Act as first point of contact within UK&I Asset Management Team for all Grid related issues.
  • Issue regular Grid Strategy reports to the UK&I Asset Management Team
  • Prepare & deliver presentations and reports for Asset Management team and/or clients
  • Lead on the development of status reporting to identify Grid activity across entire portfolio

Internal Engagement

  • Coordinating resources within the business where necessary and ensuring that appropriate contracts are agreed with clients and time and cost is accounted for appropriately within the business;
  • Liaising with the Energy Networks Team, create a central point of contact for Grid related content/reports/activities
  • Liaise with Asset Managers and Site Operations Managers to ensure any Grid activity at site level is regularly fed back and included in regular asset reports issued to clients
  • Increase team awareness on Grid issues/services through presentations and workshops
  • Supporting the asset management team with the Integration and adoption of wind, solar and battery storage projects.

External Engagement

  • Work with clients to identify their requirements and key points of contact
  • Attend Industry Events and contribute to industry consultations
  • Engage with DNO/TSO if grid compliance issues are identified on sites within the company portfolio
  • Engage with OEMs where required on projects that involve testing or hardware/software updates by the OEM, ensuring obligations of the connection agreement are met.

Alongside the technical accountabilities, the role will also require:

  • Travel within UK, Ireland and Europe
  • Attendance at key and relevant conferences including presenting at public events to enhance the company’s visibility in the market

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of wind turbine, battery energy storage systems and solar technology, health and safety management systems, quality and environmental management systems and work control procedures.
  • Electrical Safety rules in the context of Renewable Energy Infrastructure
  • HV Electrical Equipment and Industry Standards
  • Grid related regulations, policies and industry consultations for distribution, transmission or ICP connected renewable generation

Experience

  • Project Management in an engineering environment. Renewables preferred
  • Experience of Wind and Solar technology
  • Managing budgets and project costs
  • Contract specification review and preparation
  • Dealing with Grid related issues on operational renewable assets
Qualifications
  • Degree/HND or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering or relevant Business / Commercial discipline
