Large international Solar Developer is looking for a Design Engineer to support the growth of development pipeline and processes at the technology selection, design and planning stages as well as provide early stage EPC support, with a strong focus initially on;

  1.   Supporting the UK development team, planning submissions of solar and co-located solar and storage projects, including project optimisations and technology review, but also supporting our activities as required in Spain, Italy, Poland and Romania.
  2. Undertake storage design evaluations, component reviews and technical evaluations for co-located and stand-alone storage project in the UK (later expanding to European projects)
  3. Inform and support construction, EPC management, procurement and asset management teams as required

Therefore the successful candidate for the role will provide technical design support specifically during the conceptual and planning phases of our utility scale solar projects (including potential co-located or stand-alone storage projects), and also support and the delivery stages of company’s solar and solar plus storage pipeline.

The Solar & Storage Design Engineer will be responsible for turning the initial concept ideas into fully detailed construction ready designs and will be working primarily on utility scale solar projects.

Responsibilities

  • Provide initial feasibility site layout designs and design expertise to support the evaluation of suitable sites for solar development, incorporating site specific constraints and requirements
  • Assess the suitability of, and identify opportunities to incorporate; alternative, new and emerging technologies e.g. East-West systems, tracking systems, storage co-location
  • Support the Project Team through the planning process with review of technical parameters, site design amendments and revisions
  • Support the ongoing assessment of including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Company’s solar portfolio across all jurisdictions
  • Liaise with Grid Connections Manager/ICP as required
  • Provide detailed Yield assessment analysis, including P50/P90 simulation (PV Syst and pvDesign)
  • Develop technical specifications and scopes of work for engineering firms and contractors
  • Provide technical and commercial expertise to support tender assessment, procurement of equipment and negotiation of contract
  • Assess technical suitability of selected equipment
  • Develop comprehensive design packages for solar PV systems with detailed layouts and electrical design that meet all contractual, code, and permitting requirements
  • Review and recommend appropriate irradiance meteo data for Energy Yield Assessments
  • Complete system designs for PV projects including site layouts, PV Syst designs, mechanical racking and attachment plans, single-line electrical drawings, specification of BOS and interconnection details
  • Provide streamlined project information and detailed bill of materials to the Project Team
  • Provide technical assistance in the development of each project, ensuring all site design factors are considered and risk-assessed and that the most efficient and viable designs are pursued in line with project development requirements
  • Undertake site visits when required
  • Develop and maintain excellent relationships with external design teams, EPC contractors and consultants.
  • Provide technical due diligence support during project acquisition

Requirements

  • Have proven track record & experienced in a similar role
  • Have ideally 2-3 years of design experience in utility scale solar PV
  • Be a competent user of AutoCAD, PVSyst , PV Design and Microsoft Office
  • Have demonstrable experience of working to strict deadlines
  • Have previous experience in the design/construction of PV solar plants
  • Hold a degree in a relevant technical discipline
  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Have strong technical knowledge of the utility scale ground mount solar PV design
  • Have strong technical background in renewables and good commercial understanding
  • Have Electrical and Civil engineering design knowledge
  • Have strong analytical and research skills
  • Have strong communication skills
  • Have the ability to multi-task and manage numerous projects simultaneously
  • Have the ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Have excellent time management
  • Have strong organisational skills
  • Be process driven

Workplace and Travel

The Development Engineer will work primarily from home and must be able to arrange for a suitable work environment, with the required tools provided.  Travel may be nationwide as required particularly for site visits, but some international travel may also be required.
